Sustainable Food Consumption: Demand for Local Produce in Singapore

The rapid pace of climate change has exacerbated Singapore’s ever-present vulnerability to food shortages. While most current supply is imported, the country working towards becoming self-sufficient in at least 30% its demand by 2030. Though a high proportion Singaporeans have pro-environmental views and believe that buying locally grown more eco-friendly, for local produce remains low. To better understand cause this attitude–behaviour gap, study investigated factors influencing purchasing decisions consumers, as well their willingness pay premium produced vegetables, eggs, seafood Singapore. estimation results suggested what primarily hinders consumers with positive perceptions sustainability not income or product price. Instead, product-specific factors, such freshness quality produce, easiness identify store were found be positively associated purchase. Ensuring these can potentially lead higher Attitudes behaviours related played larger role (WTP) than purchase decision making. Thus, enhance WTP educating public regarding aspect may prove effective.
